Our architectural approach focuses on opening the interior spaces outward, creating a strong connection with the surrounding environment. The extension introduces two distinct garden areas, each designed with its own specific function, encouraging play, interaction, and a close relationship with nature.
Materially, the project explores the contrast between permanence and organic warmth. The exterior is clad in copper, a living material that evolves over time, developing a natural patina. Inside, the atmosphere is shaped entirely by organic materials, offering a tactile, inviting, and sensory-rich environment, perfectly suited to the world of childhood.

The town holds two notable designations:
- Fondations du Patrimoine, highlighting architectural heritage
- Participation Citoyenne, promoting active community involvement
It is also part of the Les 2 Vallées intercommunal territory.
The project site is set back from the town center, within a residential neighborhood. The plot is largely open to the street, except along its northern edge. A row of plane trees forms the only significant natural boundary.
Two distinct urban typologies coexist in this area:
- A more rural layout
- A suburban, detached-housing pattern
The Role of Vegetation
Vegetation plays a key role in the site’s character.
Numerous plant-based fences filter views and contribute to an ever-changing landscape across the seasons.
- In summer, the former train station is almost hidden by dense vegetation.
- In winter, it stands fully exposed and visible from the street.
Architectural Heritage
The existing building features a stone base and displays the typical style of early 20th-century industrial railway architecture, combining stone and brickwork. These elements represent a valuable architectural heritage to be preserved and enhanced through the project.
Orientation and Natural LightThe building benefits from a dual east-west orientation, with the main façade slightly turned northward.
The south-facing wall, being blind, limits direct sunlight around midday, which reduces the quality of natural interior lighting an important consideration integrated into the design process.
A toy library is a public or community-run cultural facility offering access to toys, board games, and dedicated play spaces.
It is a local cultural hub that encourages social interaction, learning through play, and is open to all age groups, regardless of ability.
To ensure an effective and logical organization of games, the toy library adopts the ESAR classification system, developed by Denise Garon, Ph.D., in the late 1970s. This system categorizes games based on cognitive, motor, and behavioral dimensions across four main types:
- Exercise games – sensorimotor
- Symbolic games – role-play and fiction
- Construction games – building and assembly
- Rule-based games – structured play with rules
In addition to game types, the ESAR model also identifies dominant skill types (manipulation, imitation, creation), as well as social participation behaviors, defined in four categories:
Social Behavior in Play:
- Solitary play: The child plays alone with toys, often unrelated to those of nearby children. Their focus is on their own activity, with little to no interest in others.
- Parallel play: The child plays near others using similar or different materials, but with no real interaction. They play alongside rather than with other children.
- Competitive play: The child interacts with others in shared activities, but focuses on achieving the same goal. This may lead to rivalry, or, in more mature play, adherence to shared rules.
- Cooperative play: The child participates in a structured group activity with a shared productive goal. Success depends on role distribution, coordinated actions, and complementarity of efforts.
Exterior
The extension is clad in copper sheet metal, a living material that changes over time as it weathers naturally.
This deliberate industrial aesthetic forms a dialogue with the heritage of the former train station, allowing the building to evolve and integrate into its environment over time.
The interior layout is based on a free plan, entirely on the ground level.
This open configuration promotes flexibility, spatial fluidity, and interaction between users and activities. It also extends naturally to the exterior spaces.
The materiality of the interior is defined by raw earth, offering a sensory connection to the exterior copper cladding.
This natural material brings softness, warmth, and contributes to a welcoming and calming atmosphere, especially suited to childhood spaces.
Curved forms define the interior spaces, in contrast with the geometric rigidity of the extension's volume.
The use of earth introduces an ecological dimension aligned with the values of the Gâtinais Regional Natural Park, which promotes energy-efficient and sustainable architecture.
Raw earth and copper form a material and symbolic duality:
- Earth represents grounding, warmth, and ecological continuity
- Copper evokes transformation, reflection, and architectural permanence
